♫ We wish you a merry Christmas, we wish you a merry Christmas…♫
And so the song goes, until it gets to the “figgy pudding” when things get a little demanding and they’re not going til they get some. But what is a “figgy pudding?” Well, it’s a traditional English Christmas pudding dating back to the 16th century. It’s made of raisins, sultanas, candied peels, figs, all the usual dried fruit, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, brandy, even beer sometimes. It’s cooked a month ahead and can be baked, boiled, steamed, or fried and then it’s generally set on fire before serving. A lot of work.
Q: What’s the main ingredient in figgy pudding?
Hint: No, it isn’t brandy.
